Artist Talk with Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas

Join us at the Gallery for a presentation from Haida artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas. Moderated by Jordanna George, guest curator of XIÁM, Michael will discuss his practice as an artist and insight into his work in the ‘Haida Manga’ style. He is one of the featured artists in our current mezzanine exhibition XIÁM.

About the Artist

Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas is a Haida visual artist, author, and mischief-maker. His art lives in public spaces and private collections including the British Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Humboldt Forum in Berlin, Seattle Art Museum, Museum of Anthropology at UBC, and Vancouver Art Gallery. His publications include Flight of the Hummingbird, RED, Carpe Fin, War of the Blink, and, most recently, JAJ, published by Douglas & McIntyre in 2023. In 2021, UBC Press published a catalogue of his work, Mischief Making: Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, Art, and the Seriousness of Play by Dr. Nicola Levell. He is currently at work on a mural for the Vancouver Art Gallery.
