About Chef Shane Chartrand
Executive Chef at SC Restaurant, River Cree Resort & Casino

Chef Shane Chartrand, a proud member of the Enoch Cree Nation, is one of North America’s leading voices in Indigenous cuisine. Raised on an acreage in central Alberta, he grew up immersed in the traditions of hunting, fishing, and living off the land. These early experiences shaped his respect for the environment and inspired a lifelong passion for food.

Chef Chartrand honed his culinary craft at NAIT in Edmonton, earning his Red Seal certification and later receiving an Honorary Degree and Award of Excellence for his contributions to the culinary arts. Over the years, he has worked with renowned chefs, trained in some of the country’s top kitchens, and led esteemed hotels, resorts, and restaurants, including SC Restaurant in Enoch, Alberta.

As a fierce competitor, Chef Chartrand has earned gold at the Canadian Gold Medal Plates Championships—becoming the first Indigenous chef to do so—and appeared on popular food shows like Top Chef CanadaIron Chef CanadaChopped CanadaFridge Wars, and Wall of Chefs. He also co-authored the award-winning cookbook tawâw: Progressive Indigenous Cuisine in 2019, a celebration of his heritage and innovative culinary style.

Beyond the kitchen, Chef Chartrand is a sought-after keynote speaker and advocate for Indigenous food culture. From New York City to Cairo, he has inspired audiences around the globe with cooking demonstrations and talks that highlight the deep connections between food, culture, and identity. His work has been featured in the Red Chef Revival documentary and APTN’s Michif Country.

"Food is all I know," says Chef Chartrand, "and I’m always eager to learn, create, and explore more."
