Join us for a hands-on workshop with featured artist Sydney Pascal, whose work is currently on view in 'Every River Has a Mouth'. In this session, participants will create a fish skin leather key chain or small pouch, guided by Sydney’s knowledge and creative practice.
Working with fish leather, an Indigenous material practice rooted in resourcefulness and respect for the land and water, Sydney will share her process and introduce participants to the unique qualities of this material.
No prior experience is needed. This workshop offers a meaningful opportunity to learn directly from a contemporary Indigenous artist and to create something beautiful with your own hands.
Limited to 15 participants. All supplies provided.
🔴 About 🔴
Sydney Frances Pascal is a member of Líl̓wat nation. She is currently living and working on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.
Her multi-disciplinary practice includes hide tanning, video, sound, and poetry. She uses her practice to tell her family’s story, speak about identity and what it is like navigating as an Indigenous person within a colonial society. Her work over the past few years is grounded in her continued connection to land-based material practices. She most recently showed work in the 2024 Whitney Biennial: Even Better Than The Real Thing.
