April 22 - October 4, 2020
In 2020, the Bill Reid Gallery is commemorating the 100th anniversary of Bill Reid (1920-1998). Our featured exhibition To Speak with a Golden Voice will bring a fresh perspective to the legacy of one of Canada’s most renowned contemporary Indigenous artists. Through the presentation of rarely seen treasures, personal stories from friends and community, and newly commissioned works, this exhibition will bring a new awareness to Bill Reid’s story, his motivations, and how he continues to inspire Northwest Coast art and artists today.
Guest Curator Gwaai Edenshaw is an artist and community leader who was mentored by Reid and is considered to be his last apprentice. Edenshaw’s uniquely personal perspective will provide an insightful look at the complexities of Bill Reid's life and legacy. Edenshaw will highlight how Reid inspired and shaped Northwest Coast art through four overarching themes: voice, process, lineage, and relationships. An accompanying publication will feature Bill’s own words with his art and personal stories from artists and friends.
