Matriarchs Seen and Unseen is a solo exhibition featuring the work of Nuu-Chah-Nulth photographer Melody Charlie. Aunties, mothers, and grandmothers are pillars in Indigenous communities everywhere. These matriarchs lead not only their families, but community members as well. While much of the work that they do is celebrated, there are many matriarchs who quietly work in supportive roles that receive less recognition. The photography of Melody Charlie featured in Matriarchs Seen and Unseen celebrates the work of all matriarchs, focusing on their strength, wisdom, leadership and responsibilities.
This exhibition features over 20 powerful portrait photographs of matriarchs within Melody’s own territory and across the province. While documenting community members, ceremonies, and traditional cultural practices such as art and harvesting, Melody captures both the joyous laughter, the deep connections and the difficult moments.
