This year’s annual Talking Stick Festival is sure to whet your musical appetite. Along with theatre, dance, spoken word, film, and visual art, this year's festival has a strong focus on music and you won’t be disappointed!
Here are 3 musical events to add to your calendar:
Heartbeatz! is just one of the events that feature an inspiring line-up of music. The line-up includes alt-folk rock artist Diyet & The Love Soldier's (Southern Tutchone/Tlingit) unique blend of contemporary Indigenous music, soulful loop artist David Morin (Metis), blues-roots artist Norine Braun (Metis), and DJ O Show (Squamish). Heartbeatz! happens on February 17th at the Russian Hall (600 Campbell Avenue, Vancouver) and tickets are $20 dollars for adults and $15 dollars for students and seniors. Doors are at 7:30pm. The concert is suitable for ages 19 and older, and there will be a cash bar.
Indigi Groove is a concert that features self-styled gypsy blues band Blue Moon Marquee, an authentic duo consisting of velvet-toned vocalist and guitarist A.W. Cardinal (Metis and Cree) and Jasmine Colette, aka Badlands Jazz. Badlands Jazz is the rhythm section, commanding the upright bass while keeping the swing with her feet and joining on vocals with harmonies. Aside from being the most requested band for the TD International Jazz Festival circuit, Blue Moon Marquee have toured the world, sharing their smoldering onstage chemistry and “Bukowski-esque” mystique. See and hear it for yourself at Studio Lounge & Nightclub (919 Granville St, Vancouver) on February 22nd. Tickets priced at $15. The concert is suitable for ages 19 and over.
On February 19th at 7 pm gather at the Roundhouse Exhibition Hall (181 Roundhouse Mews, Vancouver) for the Scháyilhen Pop-Up Musical Bistro. Enjoy the catered feast, fill your glass at the cash bar and move to Curtis Clear Sky (Blackfoot and Anishinabe) and his nine-piece band, the New Constellationz and their highly danceable funk grooves. An eclectic mix of poets, musicians and other visiting artists will be featured throughout the night, as well. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for students and seniors, and $10 for children.
