Sho Sho Esquiro: Doctrine of Discovery
Artist Tour with Sho Sho Esquiro

Teachers are invited to join award-winning designer, artist and activist Sho Sho Esquiro (Kaska Dena/Scottish) for a tour and discussion about her current exhibition at the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art. Using meticulously crafted couture gowns, textiles, paintings, and photographs, Esquiro celebrates the beauty, strength, and resilience of First Nations communities in the face of historical and ongoing trauma. This powerful exhibition sheds an urgent light on the devastating impacts of the Doctrine of Discovery, an international law that falsely gave European settlers dominion over the lands and Indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere.

In this program, educators will gain a broader and deeper understanding of contemporary issues, such as colonial practices, MMIWG, and Indigenous activism, to help you navigate conversations and projects with Indigenous content in the classroom.

A limited number of in-person (25 attendees) spots are available. Masks and vaccine passports will be required.

The tour and discussion will also be shared online—registration is required.
*Registrants for online will receive a link one day before the program.
