Amy is from Masset, a village in Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, Canada. She is an argillite carver and has been practicing this skill since she was 16 years old. She learned from her father Myles Edgars who also has been carving for the majority of his life. Since Amy was 13 she has been harvesting the argillite that she uses to carve.

There is only one argillite quarry in Canada on Haida Gwaii and this is where carvers gather to harvest the stone. This must be done by hand using tools such as hand saws, steel wedges, sledge hammers, and crowbars to name a few. Argillite is used because it’s high moisture content makes it easier to carve than other stones. The drier the argillite becomes the more likely it is to crack or flake during the carving process, this is why it is such a delicate material to work with.

Amy loves the experience of carving and celebrates the feeling she achieves when she finally finishes one of her intricate pieces.
