"When a Chilkat is worn, the central part of the blanket lands squarely upright at the centre of the wearer's back, and the profile faces at either side drape over the wearer's arms at the front. The wearer may announce his or her crest affiliation by entering a dwelling or area backward, crest face first. Dancing the robe causes the long wool fringes to sway rhythmically...one Chilkat blanket may take a year or more to produce, woven using cedar bark and mountain goat wool...The intricate designs feature geometric grid-like patterns that contain abstracted crest and story figures...Skilled weaving women undertook the manifestation of the design" (Shearar 2000: 28). Understanding Northwest Coast Art: A Guide to Crests, Beings and Symbols
