Blue FormlineAlano Edzerza (Tahltan)
"The two basic colours of Northwest Coast graphic art are black and red. Black, the primary colour, is mainly used for the [formline], a strong contoured line which structures the design and clarifies the anatomy of the subject by defining the head wings, joints, tails etc. Red, the secondary colour, is generally reserved for elements of secondary importance. When occasionally an artist reverses this order, the red [formline] still creates the framework of the design" (Stewart 1979: 19) - Looking at Indian Art of the Northwest Coast
Edzerza’s formline series is his homage to Andy Warhol silk-screens in the best of Factory tradition. These designs highlight elements of the Sea-monster series and were done in red, blue, green and purple — colours that Edzerza feels are the real primary colour spectrum.
