Watch the recorded Artist Talk

Ligwiłda'xw Kwakwaka’wakw multidisciplinary artist Sonny Assu will be giving a virtual artist talk on January 28th, via Zoom to discuss his practice and artwork featured in our newest exhibition, Keeping the Song Alive. The exhibition which explores the potlatch ban, ethnomusicologist

Dr. Ida Halpern’s recordings of the banned potlatch music, and Kwakwaka’wakw perseverance, holds a lot of familial significance for Sonny.

His great-great-grandfather Chief Billy Assu provided Ida with potlatch songs for her to record. In doing so, Billy aided in the preservation of his traditional music. He is one of the main pivotal components of Keeping the Song Alive, and Sonny’s work reflects this.
